The curse of living in interesting times has never been more apt than after this year's election, and I fear that we are heading for a kleptocracy.

After two terms of Obama, living under a president with values closely mirroring my own, a quietly brilliant man with high emotional maturity and an almost Vulcan like affect toward his detractors, the country prospered.

Social programs were expanded, huge strides were made toward universal healthcare (with many states stomping their feet and refusing to offer affordable options), unemployment and crime levels were on a downward spiral, a leader who was proud to follow the science on climate change, he was beloved around the world.

But here, in my country, there was a huge divide, based on ethnicity, but even more so on class.

Young black men (children as well), were murdered, by white men.

Trayvon Martin was hunted and murdered by the coward George Zimmerman, and what seemed like a flood of unarmed black men were murdered by police.

All of this social unrest led to a sharper division by race.

And then, a reality star decided to throw his hat into the ring for the presidency.

No one took him seriously, not the voters, not our legislators, not even the press, and some have said, not even himself.

But Trump had a winning formula, he didn't appeal to the educate (declaring he wanted the opposite, he loved the uneducated) , to those who wanted to help the poor and working class, to those who wanted to take a macro view on climate change, in other words, liberals.

Like myself.

And his momentum continued to grow, among those who felt left behind, those who wanted the good old days where men were men and women did what they were told, a world where a single male high school or less earner could achieve the American dream, a house, car, stay at home mom, vacation once a year, union job.

And he appealed to those who had no other achievements than being white, and promised them the snake oil of his plans to make America great again, but his plans were a secret, he would tell us all when he was president.

And the college educated, the ones who just knew no one would be stupid enough to vote in a man with no political experience, no idea of how government works, who reacted to debates or any sort of question with name calling, threats, the man who made fun of the disabled, the handicapped, the man who jokingly instructed his followers to use their second amendment right to bear arms to deal with his enemies, the man who based a woman's value solely on looks, sex appeal, who made inappropriate remarks about his own daughter, the man who had several women accuse him of sexual assault, the man who was taped joking about grabbing women by the pussy, this man was the Republican candidate for president, a man that said during a debate that he would jail his opponent if he won, how could someone like this ever be a threat?

Many smart comics, such as Bill Maher, began to see, he really could win.

But, on voting night, along with the rest of the country, watched the voting results pour in.

All the polls had Hillary far, far ahead, it seemed slam dunk that our country would have our first woman president, the democratic candidate with thirty plus years of experience, unarguably the most qualified candidate we've ever had.

And as the night went on, it became clear, this race would be much closer than anticipated.

And then it became clear, Trump would win the electoral college vote, and the presidency.

Many of us, especially POC, gay, transgender, pro-choice, but anyone who wasn't the one percent, are scared.

The parallels to Hitler's ascent to power are clear, except the hatred is directed toward Muslims, a registry, hate crimes are on the rise, it's as if the Trump win made it so much easier for people to not only say what had been on their minds, but to act on their rascist hatred.

It is becoming clear that while a lot of Trump's campaign promises, from building a wall with Mexico to dismantling Obamacare, were just campaign smoke, but some of the things, such as tax cuts for the rich and raising tax rates for the poor, will come to pass.

But what will be interesting is how he will keep his promises to create more jobs, to give  Americans a standard of living that is simply not attainable.

The union jobs that for a period for our white grandfathers to achieve the American dream?

They do not exist anymore, such as coal mining, and if they do come back, they are all automated, one man behind a truck can do the work of what used to be a whole gaggle of workers.
